Millfield Library visited by award-winning author
Roll up, roll up…the circus comes to Millfield library!
A pilot project delivered by Millfield library in conjunction with the School of Health, Wellbeing & Inclusion and Hill Croft school saw the library transformed into a circus big top on Friday 24th January when a group of supported learners were treated to a performance by award-winning children’s author, Kelly McCaughrain.
Kelly is the new Children’s Writing Fellow for Northern Ireland, a post created and funded by Queen’s University and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Kelly also works as a note taker in Belfast Met.
Kelly read extracts from her first novel Flying Tips for Flightless Birds. The book stars flying-trapeze double act and brother/sister twins, Finch and Birdie Franconi, and their geeky friend, Hector Hazzard. It deals with trying to fit in by celebrating being different.
Kelly said “Thank you to Belfast Met for having me! I had such a lovely morning with such enthusiastic readers!”
Faith Garrett, Childcare lecturer, stated “When I approached the library to support me in welcoming Hill Croft School students this year on their ‘Transition to college’ programme, we wanted to make the library such an important part of their journey to Belfast Met, and they have certainly have helped me in doing so.”
We hope to deliver more reading for pleasure sessions in support of the library service’s aim to increase reading literacy amongst FE students.
