Gearoidin Barr from Belfast Metropolitan College has won the Breakthrough award at the Prince’s Trust NI Celebrate Success awards.

The Prince’s Trust and TK Maxx & Homesense Celebrate Success Awards, now in their 13th year, recognise disadvantaged young people who have overcome issues such as abuse, drug addiction, homelessness, depression and unemployment.

Gearoidin was awarded the breakthrough award for her progression and development of new skills to enable her to make positive steps towards facing challenges in her life.

Speaking at last night’s event in Titanic Belfast, Gearoidin Barr, said:

“The Team Programme has changed my life. It’s given me confidence and made me start believing in myself. This time last year I was just existing but now I'm living and loving my life. Everyday tasks like going on the public transport was impossible to me until I enrolled in the course and started changing all that. I felt worthless through no fault of my own but because of the things that happened when I was 14 and thought that my potential was zero. Now I know I have a future ahead of me and a life worth living and can't wait to see what the future holds for me. I could never repay you all for your help. Thank you

Belfast Academy Lecturer, Gary Brammeld, said:

“Gearoidin has demonstrated an excellent attitude toward the course and the team including all planning and activities included as part of the course. Her attendance and time keeping has been 100% and she continues to set an excellent standard for others around her to follow. Now she has found her feet again she is off and running toward more achievements and great successes and we have no doubt she will do well in all that she takes on in her future as she possesses the most important elements for continued achievement - dedication, attitude, perseverance, open-mindedness and grit. Well done!”
