ESOL Assessment and Enrolment
You must be at least 16 years old to study ESOL/ELT at Belfast Metropolitan College. All new students must complete the assessments / tests before the start of the course. You will do a test to check your level of English and our ESOL/ ELT staff will advise you on the best course for you.
Belfast Met - January 2023 Assessment & Enrolment Process
January Enrolment open ONLY for students at Level B1 and above for evening classes.
Most of our courses are now full, however we may have a few spaces available for Speaking and Listening courses during the evening. If you are interested, please check your level here.
To avoid disappointment, please make sure you are at the level of B1 or above before booking an Eventbrite session as you will also be tested by our ESOL lecturers at enrolment. (You will not be offered a place unless your English level is at B1 level or above).
Students scoring B1 or above are welcome to book an Eventbrite session.

Online Assessment
What is ESOL Assessment?
Before you start an ESOL course at Belfast Met, we need to check your level of English. At the ESOL assessment we will test your English and give you advice about the best class for you
What if I have no access Online to do the Assessment?
If you cannot do the assessment online, please email [email protected]
What should I need to enrol?
Please send us Photographic ID - Passport, Identity card, or an official document that shows your photograph, name, nationality, and date of birth clearly
We will also email you an enrolment form that needs completed and sent back to us before your enrolment date.
Do I need to do the Assessment if I already have a certificate showing my level of English?
If you have passed an official English exam in the last 12 months, please send us the certificate by email. This will help us to decide on the best class for you. Please note that you will still need to book an assessment appointment.
At what age can I start studying at the college?
You must be 16 years old or over on 1 July 2022.
What if I have no English?
You will still need to book on for the assessment and select Pre-Entry during booking.

Courses are planned to be delivered face to face. However, due to Covid-19 and Public Health Authority advice, they may have to be moved to blended or online delivery.

Please note that if you enrol on an ESOL course:
- You are expected to attend all the classes.
- If you do not attend classes you may not be allowed to complete your course.
- If you cannot attend one class you must inform your teacher in advance
- You are expected to sit the examination at the end of the course.
