Electrical and Electronic Engineering students are finalists for World Skills UK

Published: 29 September 2021

The Electronics, Media and Music department were delighted to learn that another two students have made it through the Northern Ireland regional heat to go on to compete in the national World Skills UK final.

Level 3 students Shane Dalzell and Nathan Dane have just completed their Extended Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Belfast Met has been hosting the WSUK regional competition in Industrial Electronics since May 2013. During that period, 2 students have won Gold medals and 2 students have won Bronze. Also 3 Belfast Met students have been on the squad training with one of them going on to represent the UK at the WSUK International competition.

Competing on a world stage was Balint Bogdan Gold who represented the UK in 2015 at the International World Skills in Brazil. Although Belfast Met has had success in this competition in the past, other students have made it to the final but didn't medal so we wish Nathan and Shane all the best of luck in the upcoming final.

Their lecturer, Patrick Roberts, said: “I am very proud of what Nathan and Shane have achieved this year as they were restricted in their preparation due to Covid. This has been an incredible achievement as their classes were delivered on-line, so they didn't have the benefit of on-site training which most of the competitors had that were apprentices and have the benefit being in learning in the workplace.

“Both of the students plan to continue with Higher Education and I wish them every success for the finals in November that takes place in Gower College, Swansea”
