Donaghadee woman overcomes stroke to graduate with flying colours
Janice MacArthur (51) from Donaghadee Graduated from Belfast Met with an ESOL Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) in November.
Janice amazingly got through her course with flying colours after suffering a mini brain stem stroke which forced her to take time out of her studies during 2014. Janice resumed her course in 2015 but then, due to a spinal injury, was forced to undergo surgery in November 2015.
Despite these challenges, Janice attended class as soon as possible after surgery and spent additional time at home catching up with her studies.
She said: “I'm so proud to have graduated and to have done so well. I am able to use my course in my area of employment in CCEA. Many Primary Schools are dealing with 'newcomer' issues and I hope that I will be able to assist schools in this area in the future. It was difficult going back to class so soon after major surgery but I was determined to finish the course. I really enjoyed my time at Belfast Met and the support I received from both tutors and students was amazing.”
