Newtownabbey woman swaps four gold medals for graduation scroll
A Newtownabbey woman swapped her Commonwealth gold medals for a graduation scroll on Wednesday when she graduated with her level five playwork qualification.
Kyla Mulholland (43) is fresh from picking up four gold medals for powerlifting in the Commonwealth games in south Africa and the mum of two who owns the Den after school club in Greenisland celebrated with her family at Belfast Met’s graduation held in Titanic Belfast.
She said: “I am delighted to be graduating today and my qualification has helped me so much for running my after school club business. We recently had an inspection and the improvements I have made after learning about new playwork methods in my course resulted in us getting an excellent review. It has also helped me become a more rounded manager. I have a little son who is on the autistic spectrum and the course has enabled me to help him more too. My Belfast Met tutor was just amazing, full of energy and positivity!”
East Belfast girl and NI Travel News Student of the Year graduates
A Castlereagh girl is celebrating after winning overall NI Travel News Student of the Year Award and graduating from her course at Belfast Met with flying colours.
Lauren Willis (22) graduated from Belfast Met on Wednesday with a foundation degree in Travel and Tourism after previously completing her BTEC Level three at the college.
Lauren now works in the visitor’s Office of Hillsborough castle where she completed her placement.
Speaking from Titanic Belfast where the ceremony took place, Lauren said: “This has been a fantastic year – I was thrilled to win the award and have had a wonderful day at my graduation – it is also my dad’s birthday which has made it really special. I really enjoyed my course at Belfast Met – the tutors were fantastic and it has really just confirmed to me that I want to work in this industry.”
Markethill Girl Graduates with the Chartered Institute of Marketing
Markethill girl Kerrie Walker graduated with flying colours in her CIM Digital Marketing course (Professional Certificate) at Belfast Met’s Graduation on November 15th.
Formerly a student of Portadown College, the course helped Kerrie make a successful start on the career ladder helping Lurgan bakery – New Found Joy and parent company Alana Interiors build brand awareness through traditional and digital marketing techniques.
Kerrie said: “There is a large stigma with gluten free products and the skills I have learned have helped me raise the brand awareness and grow the sales of New Found Joy within the past year. I have already started my Diploma through the Chartered Institute of Marketing and I am looking forward to what the next year brings.
New Found Joy are currently supplying Gluten Free Traybakes throughout the North and South of Ireland and are currently exporting the products to Dubai and Abu Dhabi and confirmed an order for Saudi Arabia this week. I will be travelling to Chennai, India in January to meet with potential customers for export opportunities.”

An Antrim woman has graduated with flying colours despite breaking her neck in an accident a few weeks into her Health and Social Care degree course.
Keren Rock (32) fell down the stairs in her house and did not know she had broken her neck until she had another accident on holiday a few weeks later.
“I was in a brace for several months and was unable to attend college at the start as it was so hard to get out of bed. My tutors were absolutely amazing- I got extensions in my exams and coursework. I The blackboard system of working was fantastic for me completing work from home. I am very proud of myself for this achievement, particularly as I am a mature student. I was thrilled to graduate today – my course was fantastic and my tutors were just amazing. After this year I have my final year of my degree to complete and I am determined to work in this industry, perhaps going into the psychology side of things.”
