Belfast Met students win at The Music Skills NI competition

The Music Skills NI competition is an annual competition owned and run by the 6 Regional Colleges in Northern Ireland. Our most talented musicians compete across 6 categories: Song writing; Cover Band; Original Band; Soundtrack; Live Electronics & DJ. The event is now in its 6th year and was hosted by North West Regional College on Wednesday 26th April.

Our talented Belfast Met students picked up awards in the following categories:

Best DJ – Winner Matt Dolan from second year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Technology. Matt had to prepare and perform a 10 minute DJ set to a live audience.


Best Live Electronics – Winner “D.A.V.E” this group is made up of 3 students from the second year Level 3 Music Technology course: Caodhan O’Reilly, Tianna Lennox and Jennifer Cooke. “D.A.V.E” had to prepare a live 5-10 minute set which could be in any style or genre but must make significant use of technology.


Belfast Met also came second in the following categories:

Best Soundtrack – 2nd place Jack Torrens from first year Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Music Technology. Jack was given 48 hours to produce music and sfx for a video clip.

Best Cover Band – 2nd Place “Mulholland Collective” made up from students from the first year of our HND in Music and second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music: Eilis Mulholland, David Purvis, Conor Burns, Matt Holland, Ashley Smith and Dylan Lennox. “Mulholland Collective” prepared two songs: Back to Black and Feeling Good to perform live to an audience.


All categories were judged by a panel of industry experts which this year included Paddy Glasgow, Promoter and founder of Glasgowbury and Alana Henderson, Northern Irish singer-songwriter and cellist.
