A Belfast Met student has won a £20k scholarship towards his sports studies.

Magherafelt’s Patrick O’Neill (20) was awarded the JP McManus award at a ceremony in Limerick recently.

The former Belfast Met BTEC Sports and Exercise student was awarded the funds which will go towards his degree in Sport and Performance Science at St Mary’s University College, London.

Head of the School of Health, Wellbeing and Inclusion at the college, Sharon Rivers, who attended the awards ceremony with Patrick, said: “PJ worked extremely hard whilst studying the Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. He was a valued member of the class serving as a student representative throughout the two years.

“He is a deserving recipient of this Award and I am sure it will support him well for his future career within Sport Science. As a team we are extremely proud of him, he is such a driven young man. In addition, PJ and his family are absolutely delighted with his positive experiences at Belfast Met and are very complimentary about the quality of teaching and support he got.”

The event was hosted by JP McManus with Noel Lavery Permanent Secretary for Department for Economy, representing Northern Ireland students, colleges and schools.
