Q&A with Ellie McKinney - Skills for Industry Student
Skills for Industry Programme Business Admin graduate Ellie McKinney shares her experiences
How did you find out about the programme?
I found out about this programme through a job/education search with universal credit. I had recently lost my job due to the pandemic and I needed something to focus on. I had already started looking into various courses, so it came at a perfect time.
How do you feel that the programme has helped you?
This programme has helped me in many ways; I’ve gained confidence and a better understanding of learning. As I didn’t do too well at school it made me realise that I do have potential and can achieve what I didn’t all those years ago.
Has it helped you progress into another course/job?
Yes, whilst completing my Level 1 Vocational OCN Qualification in Business Administration, I have also completed my Level 2 Essential Skills Literacy. I also hope to do my Maths and ICT as well, and progress onto another course in September.
Were there any barriers/obstacles to overcome?
For me it was the social aspect as I am a very introverted person, so socialising with new people would have been the biggest obstacle I had to overcome. However, everyone made me feel very welcome was so friendly.
Did you receive the help and support you needed?
Yes, the support from the college was amazing. The tutors and support team are always at hand for anything I needed, and no question is too small. They explained everything very clearly and are a great support network.
Did you enjoy the classroom environment or completing your course remotely?
I have a 4-year-old son, so completing the course remotely worked very well for me. I did enjoy getting to the classroom for my English class, as there is just something about being in a classroom that makes you take it in a bit more.
What are your future plans?
Now I’m looking into courses for September. I hope to do a Business Admin course or go back to get my GCSE’S and progress into further courses.
