Kaitlyn's Story: Going From a Stay-At-Home Mum to Studying What She Loves
My journey to studying at Belfast Met...
“I chose Maths and Physics because I always was good at Maths in school and found Physics so interesting when I was younger. I also want to go to university to study Civil Engineering, so Maths and Physics felt a bit less intimidating than the Engineering courses for a girl.
Even though I'm the only girl in my class, it hasn't hindered my learning or social aspect of being here, as everyone was so welcoming. I've made good friends and have become a bit more confident in myself again from this.”
Getting back into education...
“I have a 2-year-old at home so getting into education again has been so good for me. Being a young parent, getting into a good routine, and having something to focus on have made a great impact on my mental health and motivated me to set a good example for my son. I joined Belfast Met when my son was a year old and going from a stay-at-home mum to studying something I love has benefitted both of us so much. I have also met such great teachers and made new friends while studying here. I'm nearly sad the course is only 1 year long and is coming to an end.”
My greatest achievement so far...
“Getting good grades again and seeing myself progress, compared to what I was like in school when I was younger, having no motivation and not caring. Now that I have 5 offers from universities, it makes me even more motivated to finish on top of my class.”
I would encourage anyone who is considering going to Belfast Met to study here...
“There is so much help here in every aspect of student life, finance, well-being, and help to study. Any time I've had a worry or struggled in any way there has always been someone to help me straight away. The teachers are second to none in understanding and getting to know each student, they are there to help every step of the way and go the extra mile if they feel you're struggling in class.”
