Student visit by global human rights advocate

Human Rights Advocate

On Thursday 20 February, the A-Level department within the School of Academic and Continuing Education (ACE) hosted a visit by global human rights activist, Stuart Milk. The VIP visitor was accompanied by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray.

Stuart Milk is the nephew of the iconic civil rights campaigner, Harvey Milk, and President and co-founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation. Since the 1980s, he has dedicated his time to continuing his uncle’s legacy, working with LGBTQIA+ organisations worldwide and highlighting the continued need for diversity, equality and inclusion.

The engagement with Belfast Met students was the first public-facing event in a four-day visit to Northern Ireland organised at the invitation of the Lord Mayor.

This was a fantastic opportunity for A-Level students from across Politics, Sociology, History, Criminology and Religious Studies to find out more about the life of Harvey Milk and the ongoing, international campaigning work of the eponymous foundation.
