Hassan wins Pride of Britain Award 2021

Published: 3 November 2021

The College was delighted to learn that former student Hassan Alkhawam has just been honoured with the Prince’s Trust Young Achiever Award at this year’s Pride of Britain Awards.

Hassan is a former student at the College who was a Futures Project participant and studied ESOL and IELTS preparation training with Belfast Met, before starting a Software Engineering degree last year. He also developed a community enterprise, in partnership with other newcomers to support refugees and asylum seekers who live around his local area in Northern Ireland (NI Hyatt).

After Hassan and his family fled their home in Syria due to the war, they were given refugee status and rehomed in Northern Ireland in 2017. Since arriving in the country, Hassan has transformed his life with support from a number of organisations including Belfast Met and The Prince’s Trust.

He has also secured part-time employment through the Prince’s Trust ‘Get Into’ programme at Tesco and was nominated a national finalist with the Prince’s Trust National Awards in 2020.

Harry Robinson, Head of Academic and Continuing Education at the College, confirmed: “The College is extremely proud of Hassan and his achievement at the UK Pride of Britain awards. He is a dedicated and hard-working young man and deserves this recognition.

“Hassan is an inspiration for many others that have arrived in Northern Ireland and is using his own experience to help others through his involvement with NI Hyatt.”

Hassan, added: “I can’t believe it; I am over the moon and so proud of myself. When I saw how The Prince’s Trust helped people it made me want to do something to give back to my community. I love helping other people and making life easier for them.”

The biggest national awards event of its kind, this year’s unmissable Pride of Britain Awards will feature celebrities and public figures including our President, HRH Prince Charles, and a whole host of celebrity ambassadors.

The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards, in partnership with TSB, will be broadcast on ITV1 on 4th November at 8pm.
