Meghan-Louise Meban - HND in Applied Biology

What Course did you study at Belfast Met?
I studied the HND in Applied Biology.

Where did you progress to and what role are you in now?
I went on to study Microbiology with Professional studies at QUB, and then after this a Masters and PhD where I am currently a postgraduate research student. During my time I have been awarded a number of prizes and attended a number of scientific meetings and conferences. I was awarded the Royal Society of Biology Top Project Award. I have attended a Poster Presentation at British Transplant Society and presented my research at the Annual Director of Public Health Report. I was also appointed QUB IMPACT Journal Community Engagement Editor 2021. On completion of my PhD, I hope to return to the Regional Virus Lab in Belfast, or work for the Public Health Agency in a health protection role.

What advice would you give to current Belfast Met students?
Be flexible in your approach to most things as this opens up more opportunities. Engage in activities related to your studies that you are passionate about as this will help you stick with your course. Finally, try not to leave things to the last minute even though it took me a while to take that on board myself!
