If you are keen rugby player / sports person then our Rugby Academy course is the course you want.  Belfast Met Rugby Academy is the leading Sports Academy in Northern Ireland for 16-18 year olds who wish to pursue a career in rugby.  It provides a unique opportunity to gain an internationally recognised qualification, whilst gaining access to top class coaching and training facilities.  Teaching, learning and assessment is fully contextualised to reflect the comprehensive coaching and sports science support programme that students have access to.  Students also get the opportunity to compete for the college team against a mixture of Grammar School, High School and Club opposition and the ethos is around player development and individual performance rather than just competitive results. 

This full-time academic programme is a one year course of study, which is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels.  At the end of year one, successful students have the opportunity to progress onto the one year top-up Extended Diploma in Sport which is equivalent to 3 A Levels.  You will study a range of practical and theoretical units including: Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport; Physiology of Fitness; Fitness Testing; Practical Sport; Fitness Training; Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise; Psychology of Sports Performance and Profiling Sports Performance.

Career Opportunities / Progression

Successful student have the opportunity to progress onto the one year top-up Extended Diploma in Sport which is equivalent to three A Levels. 

Successful students also have the opportunity to seek employment in the sport, leisure and recreation industry in careers such as sports development assistant, fitness consultant, health and physical activity co-ordinator, sports coach or leisure centre assistant, or progress to higher education courses such as the HND in Sports, Coaching and Development,HND in Sports Science or Foundation Degree in Health and Leisure Studies, in addition to an Honours Degree at University.

Entry Requirements

Requirements are pre-defined by the College's admissions criteria.  In addition to achieving the relevant qualifications, applicants must be selected at rugby trials.  The academy is open to males (playing 15s and 7s rugby and females (playing 7s rugby) athletes who would like to improve their skills and understand of the sport.


Tuition Fee


There is an annual fee of £300 for training kit, trips and the comprehensive coaching and sports science support programme.

All fees are set in accordance with DfE regulations.
