This professional course follows the curriculum based on the General Dental Council Registration requirements for Dental Nurses. The curriculum covers four areas: Clinical Practice, Professional Practice, Communication and Management/Leadership. A fully completed electronic Record of Experience (eROE) is a mandatory element of the course and must be submitted prior to external assessments. A GDC registrant within the dental practice must fully support the trainee dental nurse student in their completion of the NEBDN eROE portfolio. The eROE requires chair-side experience in dental surgeries. Throughout the academic year, you will also be expected to attend College for a minimum of three Wednesday evenings for exam revision classes.
This programme of study is likely to include enrichment units which are an additional component to enhance your employability. A minimum attendance of 80 % is expected on all aspects of the course.
The applicant must have a minimum of three months employment (either part-time or full-time employment with a minimum of 16 hours p/w) in a dental practice in advance of the course beginning in Sept 2018. The class will be on a Monday evening from 5pm - 9pm for part time students.
Career Opportunities / Progression
Successful completion will allow for application to the General Dental Council for registration. You may progress to further study in Dental Hygiene or Dental Technology. You may also apply for post-certificate courses in oral health, radiography or conscious sedation, or seek full-time employment.
Requirements are pre-defined by the College’s admission criteria for a Level 3 course. In addition, students must produce evidence that they have been vaccinated against Hepatitis B and TB. These vaccinations are mandatory to work in any dental nursing role. For part-time students who are employed by dental practices, the dentist should support the trainee dental nurse to having these vaccinations administered. Certain health conditions will require a risk assessment to be undertaken. Students will only be accepted on to the course if they can demonstrate that they are capable of carrying out all the tasks required by dental nurses in their normal course of duty. If this is in doubt, such applications will be considered on an individual basis through tasks set in clinical skills laboratory) GDC Guidelines, 2007).
Applicants must be currently employed in a Dental Surgery.
All fees are set in accordance with DfE regulations.
An excellent standard of English grammar is required to complete the eROE portfolio.
