This is an Upper-Intermediate level (Level 2) course in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). There are 2 types of Speaking and Listening level 2 ESOL courses: Intensive (14 hours per week for4 weeks) and part-time (3.5 – 4 hours per week for 10 weeks).
This general ESOL course will help you to improve your speaking and listening in English. We will prepare you for the City & Guilds ESOL Skills for Life Speaking and Listening Exam at Level 2.
This course will help you to:
• Listen and respond to spoken language, including extended information and narratives, and follow detailed explanations, adapting response to speaker, medium and context.
• Speak to communicate information (straightforward and detailed information) ideasand opinions clearly, adapting speech and content to take account of the listeners, medium, purpose and situation.
• Engage in discussion with one or more people in a variety of different situations, making clear and effective contributions that produce outcomes appropriate to purpose and topic.
• Develop pronunciation, stress and intonation patterns.
• Develop cultural awareness of working and living in the UK.
• Improve exam techniques and progress to improve overall level of English.
Upper-Intermediate topics include: education & training, careers, the environment, housing, transport, health, information technology, personal experiences, buying goods, family and friends, law and order, community involvement and local councils/government, the media, UK society.
We will also study vocabulary and grammar at Level 2 related to task types, topics and exam past papers.
We have a maximum of 20 students in ESOL classes.
Your teacher may recommend a textbook for further study but materials will be provided in class.

An assessment is required for application to this course.

Career Opportunities / Progression

This course will help you to progress through our ESOL courses. The next courses after ESOL Speaking and Listening level 2 depend on your ability and needs and may include: IELTS or Cambridge First Certificate. Please talk to your teacher at the end of the course to discuss the best progression route for you.

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 16 years old to study ESOL at Belfast Metropolitan College.
All students must be assessed before the start of the course. Our teachers will give you a short test to check your level of English and then we will advise you on the best course to suit your needs. If you have certificates from a previous ESOL course, you may not need to take the test but you must bring your certificates with you to the assessment session.
You must also bring photographic ID, such as a valid passport or national identity card to the assessment session.
