Overview

This full-time programme, validated by Ulster University, is designed for students who are interested in a career in the fields of town planning, property investment, development or housing management and who require a Foundation Degree to enhance employment prospects or progression to an undergraduate qualification in this area of study.

This course is also suitable for students who want a change in career.  Successful completion of the course will enable students to enhance their employment prospects and/or to progress to higher academic study.  A key feature of this course is a work-based learning placement within the student’s chosen sector.  In the past students have secured placements in Planning Departments of Local Councils, Housing Associations, Private Planning Consultancies and Residential/Commercial Estate Agents.  Note students must source and secure a suitable placement location/provider.

Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the Ulster University General Entrance Requirements as specified in the University General Regulations and at least one of the following:

  1. A minimum of three passes at GCSE Grade C or 4 and above, which must include Mathematics and English Language (approved equivalents can be found at www.ulster.ac.uk/study/entrance-requirements), and either
    1. A minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points at GCE A Level, or 56 UCAS points with grade D in Geography or Business Studies.; or
    2. Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma, OCR National or Cambridge Technical in Construction, Engineering, or Business with a minimum grade of Merit Pass Pass (MPP); or
    3. A minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points with a combination of A Level and/or BTEC Level 3 qualifications, or 56 UCAS points with Geography or Business Studies.
  2. Irish Leaving Certificate: a minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points with four subjects at Higher Level, or 56 UCAS including one subject at H3 from Geography or Business Studies. Must include English and Maths at min grade H6 or O4.
  3. Scottish Highers: a minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points or 56 UCAS points to include one from Geography or Business Studies: a minimum tariff of 64 UCAS points or 56 UCAS points to include one from Geography or Business Studies. Must include GCSE Maths and English at grade C or 4 and above.
  4. Access Course: A minimum 45% in approved Access to HE Diploma course, with relevant subject area.
  5. Evidence of an ability to undertake the programme through the accreditation of prior experiential learning which must be submitted in accordance with the College Policy Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) Higher Education Process available on the college website.

Over and above the tuition fees, you may incur extra costs associated with your studies, which you will need to plan for. As part of your studies the college will arrange and facilitate site visits and study trips.  Where possible the Department will seek to subsidise costs; however, there will be a contribution from the students of approximately £30 per year.  You may also choose to purchase your own textbooks and course materials or prefer your own computer and software.  Computer Aided Design and other software used on the course is available as free student copies from the software company website.

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of coursework, practical and written examination including a 400-hour work placement period in the second year of the course.  Note students must source and secure a suitable placement location/provider.​

The combination of theoretical and practical skills ensures graduates from this course are well positioned for roles within property management, housing, planning, regeneration, or real estate.

It also provides opportunity for further studies, with articulation routes to the second year (subject to final grade) of one of the following programmes at Ulster University: BSc Hons Real Estate or MSci/ BSc Hons Planning Regeneration and Development.

Alternatively, you may wish to study these subjects or other construction-related disciplines, at other Universities but should consult their respective admissions criteria for entry and progression from Foundation Degree.
