Overview

The Travel and Tourism Industry offers opportunities both locally and internationally.  The Travel and Tourism product in Northern Ireland has, in recent years, seen a growth in many areas such as Screen Tourism and World class events.  Overall, a course in Travel and Tourism Management offers vocational and academic training to develop your knowledge and understanding of the industry, develop skills in Business, Management, study, personal development, and communication to help you enhance your career prospects.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in self-funded international trips. Students also undertake local sight visits to attractions and events to enliven their learning experience.

There is also a compulsory work-based learning period in the final semester of year two which can be either local or international.  Previously, students have been placed, for example, in Miami, South Africa, Mauritius, Norway, Belgium and Amsterdam as well as locally in Tourism organisations and attractions, Travel Agencies, Events companies, Hospitality organisations and the Air and Sea Ports.  Assessment is typically by a combination of assignments and a project completed during the work placement.

Minimum entry requirements are pre-defined by the College’s admissions criteria, which can be found by visiting our entry criteria page on this link

Enhance entry criteria for this course is listed below:

  • A minimum of 64 tariff points at Level 3 (UCAS new tariff points for entry to Higher Education 2017) to include a minimum of two A2 level passes (Grade A-E) or equivalent.
  • You must also have a minimum of a Grade C/04 in GCSE English Language (or equivalent).

Applicants who do not meet the tariff points but do have prior learning and/or specific industry experience may avail of the APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) subject to BMet guidelines.  Early application is advised if you require APL.

Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol, e.g. exam certificates.

Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded now by logging into your online application account.

All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, apart from language-specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

Progression can lead to many different job opportunities, or you may wish to avail of the opportunity to continue your study by joining the BSc Hons Degree in International Tourism Management at Ulster University or other relevant courses.

Successful graduates have a choice of progression opportunities subject to their results. Students can join the final year of the BSc Hons Degree in International Tourism Management at Ulster University (upon successful completion of summer bridging modules) or to other relevant universities’ courses. Past students are working in the public sector, Tourism NI and Visit Belfast as Tourism Development Manager, there are great prospects.

The course has been developed in consultation with the Industry Advisory Board, ensuring it's relevance to current employment opportunities.  As a result, students may pursue careers in various sectors of the travel and tourism industry.  They also have the chance to be nominated for the prestigious Northern Ireland Travel News Student of the Year Award.

Potential career paths include roles with tour operators, airports, travel agencies, tourist information centres, holiday representatives and attractions such as Titanic Belfast.  Graduates may also choose to diversify into related fields such as marketing, events, hospitality or other tourism related areas. 

After completing your degree and gaining years of industry experience, you may be eligible to apply for a college lecturing position.*

*there would a requirement to study a 2 year teaching program when employed.
