VTCT Skills Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering - VTCT Skills - Barbering (601/5885/2)
Overview
This one-year course is suitable for students with an interest in barbering as a career. This qualification will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills in preparation for a career as barber.
The primary outcome of the VTCT Skills Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Barbering is to confirm your competence in the job role of assistant junior barber. All the units in this qualification relate directly to the specific job role of an assistant/junior barber.
About this course
You will learn basic barbering skills including:
· Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
· Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas
· Contribute to the development of effective working
· Shampoo and condition hair
· Assist with salon reception duties
· Blow dry hair
You will train in the College’s state-of-the-art fully, equipped commercial hair salons where your clients will include members of the public for development and assessment purposes. You will further develop your skills through project-based learning demonstrations, practical workshops, lectures, tutorials, master classes and industry visits.
Essential Skills Level 1 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy are also part of the programme of study for students who have not achieved a Grade E or equivalent in these subjects.
This programme of study is likely to include additional enrichment activities/module(s) which are included to enhance your employability.

Academic course entry requirements
You must hold a minimum of 3 GCSEs with E in Maths and English E grades. Will be required to attend essential skills English & Maths to enhance grades.
Non-academic course entry requirements
Important: All applicants must also meet the following conditions:
- be 16 years old by 1 July 2026.
- provide proof of:
§ Right to Study in the UK. For courses with work placement, proof of your right to work in the UK is also required.
§ Photographic proof of identity
- Provide translated copies of and/or demonstrate equivalency of non-UK qualifications.

Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol e.g. exam certificates.
Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded on your online application account.
All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

All fees are set in accordance with DfE regulations.
This course tuition fee is fully funded by the Department for the Economy.
You will be required to buy a Belfast Met uniform, costing approximately £45.00 and kit costing approximately £150 (if needed). Lists of kit requirements will be sent to students once enrolled.
Assessment on this programme will be by practical, written, and online assessment.
