Overview

This is a one-year course is suitable for those who wish to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, it delivers the practical skills and knowledge you will need to work successfully across a range of establishments including bars, restaurants, cafes, conference centres, banqueting venues, hotels, contract caterers, tourist information centres and visitor attractions.   

This course covers skills and knowledge relating to  

  • Food and beverage service skills 
  • Processing Payments
  • Food Safety
  • Customer service  
  • Health and safety  
  • Teamwork and communication  

You will gain valuable hands-on experience in the College’s Linen Lounge training restaurant and on placement with hospitality and tourism employers locally.  This will be in the form of a 2 week mandatory work placement throughout the duration of your programme.

If required, you may also be able to undertake the study of Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy for those who have not achieved level 2 or equivalent in these subjects. 

This programme of study is likely to include additional enrichment activities/module(s) which are included to enhance your employability.

Requirements

Academic course entry requirements

You must hold a minimum of four GCSEs at grades A to G including:

  • Maths grade A-E or equivalent and
  • English grade A-E or equivalent.

Non-academic course entry requirements

Important: All applicants must also meet the following conditions:

  • be16 years old by 1 July 2026. 
  • provide proof of: 

§ Right to Study in the UK. For courses with work placement, proof of your right to work in the UK is also required. 

§ Photographic proof of identity 

  • Provide translated copies of and/or demonstrate equivalency of non-UK qualifications.

Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol e.g. exam certificates.

Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded on your online application account.

All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

All fees are set in accordance with DfE regulations.

This course tuition fee is fully funded by the Department for the Economy. 

Students are required to supply their own kit, approximate cost £100.00.  Lists of kit requirements will be given once student is enrolled.

Students are also required to contribute approximately £20 towards cost of educational visits.

Assessment

You will develop a portfolio of evidence over your two years of study. At the end of year two you will be required to pass three assessments. An observation of your work practice, a professional discussion and a multiple-choice test paper.

On successful completion, you may be able to progress to a relevant Level 3 qualification. While on the course, many of our students find part-time employment in hotels, restaurants and licensed premises which greatly enhances the opportunity to secure full-time employment within the local vibrant and exciting hospitality industry.
