Overview

This one-year course is aimed at qualified hairdressers wishing to develop their skills and creative ability. Level 3 will give the opportunity to share experiences with other professionals and to help you realise your own potential. This course provides professional training of the highest standard in a realistic and modern working environment.

The subjects covered are the theory and practice of advanced hairdressing which will include:

  • Colour hair to create a variety of looks.
  • Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques.
  • Cut hair to create a variety of hairdressing looks.
  • Hair colour correction.

You will further develop your skills through Project based learning, demonstrations, practical workshops, lectures, tutorials, competition work, master classes and industry visits.

Essential Skills Level 2 qualifications in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT are also part of the programme of study for students who have not achieved a Grade C or equivalent in these subjects.

This programme of study is likely to include additional enrichment activities which are included to enhance your employability.

Requirements

Academic course entry requirements

You must hold a minimum of a Level 2 Hairdressing or APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning).

Non-academic course entry requirements

Important: All applicants must also meet the following conditions:

  • be16 years old by 1 July 2026. 
  • provide proof of: 

§ Right to Study in the UK. For courses with work placement, proof of your right to work in the UK is also required. 

§ Photographic proof of identity 

  • Provide translated copies of and/or demonstrate equivalency of non-UK qualifications.

Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol e.g. exam certificates.

Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded on your online application account.

All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

There are many options as a hairdresser, working in a salon, being self-employed as a freelance stylist or within a commercial salon. Hairdressing skills can be used across many industries such as Hotels, Spa’s, cruise ships, Television and film industry as a senior stylist you will work at an advanced level using all cutting and colour skills. Day to day duties of any hairdresser would include meeting different people while cutting, styling, and colouring, keeping up to date with latest trends, techniques, and products.
