Overview

The Level 2 diploma is an exciting and dynamic IT course focused on learning by completing practical tasks. This qualification takes an in-depth look at IT that’s all around us, providing students with a theoretical background reinforced with skills that transfer into the modern workplace. If you are interested in a career in the IT industry e.g. Software Development, Games Development, Web Development, Hardware or indeed general IT then this is the perfect starting point.

This course is a one-year full-time programme of study, broadly comparable to four GCSEs (A-C). Over the course of the year you complete nine units, anyone without GCSE English or Maths grade C will have to attend essential skills classes.

The course covers several units which may typically include some of the following:

  • Communicating in the IT Industry
  • Working in the IT Industry
  • Developing Programming Solutions,
  • Website Development
  • Computer Graphics
  • Animation Techniques
  • Computer Systems
  • Industry skills

This programme of study includes additional components to enhance your employability, this includes a period of work placement (this may be completed through a simulated exercise).

Throughout the course, trainees will engage in a variety of IT-related activities, including hardware and software installation, troubleshooting, network configuration, data management, and cybersecurity. They will learn to use common software applications, understand computer systems and networks, and develop problem-solving and technical skills necessary for a career in the IT industry.

Academic Course Entry Requirements

Minimum entry requirements are pre-defined by the College’s admissions criteria, which can be found by visiting our entry criteria page on this link

Enhanced entry criteria for this course is:

You must hold a minimum of a Level 1 qualification, defined as four GCSEs at grades D to G including Maths and English grades D or equivalent.

Entry requirements can changed and be discussed on an individual basis if necessary.

Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol e.g. exam certificates. 

Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded on your online application account.

All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

 

Non-academic course entry requirements

Important: All applicants must also meet the following conditions:

  • be 16 years old by 1 July 2026
  • provide proof of: 
  • Right to Study in the UK. For courses with work placement, proof of your right to work in the UK is also required. 
  • Photographic proof of identity 
  • Provide translated copies of and/or demonstrate equivalency of non-UK qualifications.

Assessment

Students are assessed using a range of different methods.

All units are assessed through assignments that are completed throughout the year. Assignments involve written assignments, group projects and class tests. Practical elements of this course also include regular team building and IT industry-related field trips/guest speakers.

Students will also complete a period of work placement (this may be completed through a simulated exercise).

On completion of this course many of our students typically choose to go on to further education IT courses including computing, games development, web development or A Levels or you may enter the IT profession possibly as an IT technician or using your new found IT skills in the creative industry.

Join our courses at the level that is relevant to you, to learn the skills and gain the knowledge you need to succeed in the IT industry. After Level 2 you could progress to Level 3 and then go on to progress on to our HND Computing or our Foundation Degree in Computing.

As you move on to higher qualifications you will be equipped with the technical skills, knowledge and experience of industry-relevant software for a career as an IT professional. You can then go on to top-up at University or go straight into work. Possible jobs are: Software Developer, Web Developer, Software Tester, Cyber Security Engineer, Data Analyst, IT Systems Administrator.
