Overview

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Business is a Level 4 qualification (equivalent to the first year of a university degree) designed to provide learners with a solid foundation in business principles, management practices, and professional skills. It prepares students for employment in a wide range of business sectors or for further study toward a Higher National Diploma (HND) or a full degree.

Aims of the Course

  • To develop a broad understanding of core business functions such as marketing, finance, human resources, and operations.
  • To enhance practical and analytical skills relevant to real-world business contexts.
  • To prepare learners for entry-level managerial or administrative roles.
  • To encourage independent thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making in business environments.
  • To provide a pathway for academic progression to higher-level qualifications.

Typical entry criteria for this course is:

  • One A Level or equivalent qualification (e.g., BTEC Level 3, Access to HE, or relevant work experience)
  • GCSE English and/or Maths (or equivalent) are often required
  • Independent learners may be accepted with relevant work experience

Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol, e.g. exam certificates.  

Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded now by logging into your online application account. 

All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, apart from language-specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

Assessment

Students are assessed using a range of different methods.  These includes,

·         Coursework-based assessment (assignments, reports, presentations, projects)

·         Some practical assessments or case studies based on real business scenarios

·         Emphasis on developing transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, and digital literacy
