Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Business (603/6838/X)
Overview
The HND in Business (HLA) is designed to provide a practical, work-based route to higher education qualifications. It combines academic study with on-the-job learning, allowing students to gain a recognised qualification while developing skills directly relevant to their employment.
Qualification: Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Business
Level: Equivalent to the first two years of a degree (Level 5)
Delivery Mode: Higher Level Apprenticeship (study + paid employment)
Duration: 2.5 years (part-time)
Assessment: Coursework, projects, case studies, presentations, and practical work-based assignments
Progression:
- Direct entry into the final year of a business-related degree
- Career advancement within management, marketing, finance, or administration roles
As an HLA, apprentices spend most of their time working in a real business environment while attending college (usually one day per week). This enables learners to:
- Apply theory to practice immediately
- Build professional networks
- Develop essential employability skills
- Gain paid work experience while studying

Enhanced entry criteria for this course is:
To be eligible for this programme, applicants must already be in employment or have secured employment with a relevant employer prior to commencing the course.
As an HLA, prospective student you will need to:
- Be in paid employment as an apprentice or be an existing employee moving to a new job role, with a Northern Ireland based company.
- Work a minimum of 21 hours per week (which includes time for ‘off-the-job’ training in college);
- Have achieved all necessary entry qualifications for the qualification.
- The specific admissions criteria for this Foundation Degree require:
- A minimum of 64 tariff points at Level 3
- You must also have at least three GCSEs A-C/4-9 to include a minimum of a Grade C/4 in GCSE English Language and/or Maths (or equivalent).
- Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol, e.g., exam certificates.
- Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded now by logging into your online application account.
- All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, apart from language-specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

This course is fully funded by the Department for the Economy
Students are assessed using a range of different methods. These includes class tests, assignments, coursework, Project Based Learning, presentations, practical assessments, role-play, and case studies.
Year 1 - Approx. 90% coursework, 10% class assessment.
Year 2 – Generally, 100% coursework
Careers
Upon completion of the HND in Business, opportunities exist to progress to further full or part-time study e.g. degree programmes or to professional qualifications such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Accounting Technicians Ireland and Institute of Leadership and Management. Or you can proceed to employment in the following areas:
- Financial analyst/accounting
- Marketing /brand marketing/digital marketing
- Sales representative/customer service
- Human Resources/ equality and diversity
All HND students have the opportunity to progress final year of Ulster University BSc (Hons) Business Studies degree on a Full-time basis.
