OCN NI Level 2 Certificate in Transversal Skills - HD 2.1A (610/1466/7)

Overview

Our Hairdressing courses enable students to develop a broad range of hairdressing skills which are delivered by highly trained staff in state-of-the-art hair salons developing new skills and client procedures in a friendly, professional, and supportive environment. You will further develop your skills through project-based learning, transversal skills, demonstrations, practical workshops, lectures, tutorials, competition work, master classes and industry visits.

The courses will cover many units for your learning experience including:

  • Health safely and science
  • Shampoo and conditioning services
  • Styling hair services
  • Setting and dressing hair services
  • Colouring and lightening hair services
  • Practical hairdressing project

Essential Skills Level 2, or appropriate assessed level, qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy are also part of the programme of study for students who have not achieved a Grade C or equivalent in these subjects.

This programme of study is likely to include additional enrichment activities/module(s) which are included to enhance your employability.

Requirements

Academic course entry requirements

You must hold a minimum of four GCSEs at grades A to G including:

  • Maths grade A-D or equivalent and
  • English grade A-D or equivalent.

Non-academic course entry requirements

Important: All applicants must also meet the following conditions:

  • be16 years old by 1 July 2026. 
  • provide proof of: 

§ Right to Study in the UK. For courses with work placement, proof of your right to work in the UK is also required. 

§ Photographic proof of identity 

  • Provide translated copies of and/or demonstrate equivalency of non-UK qualifications.

Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol e.g. exam certificates.

Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded on your online application account.

All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

All fees are set in accordance with DfE regulations.

This course tuition fee is fully funded by the Department for the Economy.

You will be required to buy a Belfast Met uniform, costing approximately £50 and kit costing approximately £147. List of kit requirements will be sent to students once enrolled.  

Assessment

You will be assessed throughout your year under continuous assessment both practically and through assignment/online assessment, with skills testing at the end year, you also have 3 project-based activities to complete. Throughout your course you will work in the college’s commercial salon Urban Escape on work placement this will help you gain the commercial salon experience and further support your skills development and progression.

There are many options as a hairdresser, working in a salon, being self-employed as a freelance stylist or within a commercial salon. Hairdressing skills can be used across many industries such as Hotels, Spa’s, cruise ships, Television and film industry as a senior stylist you will work at an advanced level using all cutting and colour skills. Day to day duties of any hairdresser would include meeting different people while cutting, styling, and colouring, keeping up to date with latest trends, techniques, and products.
