Overview
This course is funded through the Skill Up Programme.
Skill Up has been designed to provide additional upskilling reskilling opportunities to improve the skills and profile of our local workforce
A mandatory induction session will be held on 7th January from 6pm to 7pm. You must attend this session before learning commences commence on 14th January .
The OCN NI Level 3 Award in Working with Children and Young People with Special Needs (Northern Ireland) is a focused qualification aimed at giving you the knowledge and skills to work with children and young people who have special educational needs (SEN).
Learners must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the programme:
- over 18 years of age;
- eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
- ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or
- a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.
Documentation confirming eligibility of the above criteria will be requested prior to securing a place on the course.
Courses will be delivered online, and learners must have access to a computer or laptop and internet. Please note that tablets, mobile phones and TVs are not compatible and should not be used for this course. A microphone and web camera are also desirable to improve engagement in each session.
In addition, the course requires the learner to have an appropriate level of written and spoken English and computer literacy.

In order to achieve this unit, you will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence. Support will be given by course tutor in building this throughout the 10 weeks.
Careers
The qualification allows progression into further learning in this area or into employment. You might move on to a Level 4 qualification (or equivalent) in special educational needs, inclusive practice, children & young people’s services, early years or health & social care. Employment opportunities may include working as a Teaching Assistant or Special Needs Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) within a school setting, or as a Support Worker or Assistant in a specialist children’s centre, charity, or organisation that provides support for children and young people with additional needs.
