Overview
This is a two-year, full-time apprenticeship. To be eligible you must be currently working in Northern Ireland in the science sector, contracted for a minimum of 14 hours or be due to start in such a position by course start date, see also entry requirements.
This programme enables participants to acquire substantial cross-sector scientific knowledge and practical scientific skills, including carrying out practical laboratory tasks, planning investigations, collecting, analysing and presenting data, and reviewing and refining the methodology of practical and laboratory-based work. As part of the work-based qualification participants will gain skills and knowledge required to work in a scientific laboratory. It covers health and safety; effective working relationships; dealing with laboratory specimens/samples and communicating information.
You will also develop a range of interpersonal and intrapersonal skills to support progression to, and success in, further study and career advancement.
Successful completion of the apprenticeship will lead to the award of a level 3 qualification.
Five GCSEs at Grade C or above including English and Maths and Science.
Be able to provide an acceptable reference for good character and an acceptable self-declaration for health.

The following essential skills are mandatory and are to be completed as part of the apprenticeship:
Application of Number – Level 2 (Entry requirement)
Communication – Level 2 (Entry requirement)
Information and Communication Technology – Level 2
However, any qualifications you already have are assessed against the framework requirements and may result in an exemption from the above.
This course is assessed by a combination of formal external examinations and written and practical coursework
Careers
Following completion of this level 3 apprenticeship, there are several options open to you if you wish to continue your development to progress your career.
There are opportunities to continue with further vocational training or academic qualifications. These may include (but are not exclusive to):
- Foundation degrees in applied industrial science (chemical science) or applied industrial science (life science) or biological/medical science or the (NI) higher level apprenticeships in life and health science
- Higher national certificate/ diploma in science or a related subject
- Developing a career in coaching through assessor and verifier awards
- Qualifications in a related area, including (but not limited to) health and safety, training and development, business improvement techniques and supervisory management
- Membership of a professional institution at science technician level
- It is likely that successful apprentices will take up laboratory technician positions in the industrial, pharmaceutical, petrochemical and chemical sectors carrying out a wide variety of technician job roles.
