Overview

Civil Engineers keep our towns and cities running smoothly by engineering the infrastructure we use in our everyday lives including roads, bridges, water supplies and buildings.  They design and install the networks that supply energy such as gas and electricity, along with communications to our homes and public buildings.

This qualification is designed for learners wishing to gain an apprenticeship within the Civil Engineering industry.  You will gain the skills and knowledge to carry out job roles and responsibilities associated with the role of a Civil Engineer working in the built environment sector.  

Apprentices must be fully employed with a civil engineering employer from commencement of the course.  They receive no training allowance from the College but are paid by their employer.  No fees are associated with this programme.

Onus is on applicants to secure employment in addition to meeting the entry criteria for the apprenticeship programme.

This apprenticeship programme also maps directly to Professional EngTech Accreditation through Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Year 1 & 2: College 1 day per week (extended day) and with employer 4 days per week.

Requirements

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must be in employment or have secured employment with a relevant employer prior to commencing the course and meet entry criteria below:


5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths and English.

 

If you are not able to secure a suitable employer why not consider the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Civil Engineering.  This 2 year full time course is the equivalent of three A Levels and would enable progression to the Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) Civil Engineering.

 

Non-native speakers must provide evidence of competency in English Language.

 

Non-academic course entry requirements

Important: All applicants must also meet the following conditions:

·         be 16 years old by 1 July 2026

·         provide proof of: 

o   Right to Study in the UK. For courses with work placement, proof of your right to work in the UK is also required. 

o   Photographic proof of identity 

·         Provide translated copies of and/or demonstrate equivalency of non-UK qualifications.

On successful completion learners will have achieved the industry desired level of competence required to carry out the specific roles of a Civil Engineering technician.

They may be eligible to progress to the Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) Civil Engineering or FdEng Civil Engineering at Belfast Met.
