Overview

The Certificate in Higher Education in Combined Social & Behavioural Sciences is a 2-year level 4 higher education course which is the equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree course. This course is validated by Ulster University. Students study Sociology, Psychology and Quantitative Research Methods in Year 1. These are core modules and are offered on a day and evening basis. In Year 2, students choose whether to follow a Sociology or Psychology pathway and can choose between a variety of optional day or evening modules.

There are no hidden costs re: materials. However, there may be some visits or field trips and students may have to have subsistence costs, i.e. lunch etc on these trips

Requirements

A

Applicants must:

  1. a) have attained a pass in one subject at GCE ‘A’ level, or an alternative Level 3 qualification approved by Ulster University, and grades A, B or C in three other subjects at GCSE level or an equivalent standard in an approved alternative or qualification; and
  2. b) provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE grade C) or equivalent

OR

Applicants must normally provide evidence of their ability to undertake the programme through the accreditation of prior experiential learning.

Examination / Registration Fee = £170.00

Academic period 2027*:
HE Tuition Fee = £670.00
Examination / Registration Fee = £175.00

The Cert HE is 50% intensity. Part-time Higher Education students, who are studying at least 50% of an equivalent full-time course, can apply for financial help. Your entitlement will depend on your income and that of your spouse / partner. Student Finance NI will work out how much support you can get.

You may be able to receive the following: A Tuition Fee Grant and a Course Grant.  Please note: course grant does not depend on course intensity.  We can advise of funding when you attend your pre-entry advice event.

Assessment

Students will complete a range of subject specific assessments to accommodate a diversity of learning styles and individual strengths. Assessments include essays, reports, oral presentations, projects and exams.

Following successful completion of our programme, our students are eligible to apply to Year 2 of a number of Ulster’s BSc Honours Programmes including Psychology, Social Psychology, Sociology, Social Policy, Health & Social Care Policy and Sociology and Criminology.

 

It is also a stand-alone qualification. Our students may also apply for Year 2 at other universities.  However, it is the student’s responsibility to check the admissions policies of individual universities.

 

Students can also apply to Year 1 of vocational degrees, such as Social Work or Teaching at a lower entrance criteria. Students who successfully complete the course may also progress to Further and Higher Education courses within Belfast Met, including HND and Foundation Degree Programmes.
