Overview

This is a two-year programme which is equivalent to three A Levels.

The course attracts students who are interested and want to pursue a career in a fashion related discipline, progressing to higher education or employment.

 

 The program offers focused training in specific areas of fashion design, such as pattern cutting, garment construction, and fashion illustration, developing skills in CAD, sketching, rendering and technical drawings, other topics covered are principles of art and design, studying the properties and characteristics of different fabrics and materials, textile techniques including fabric manipulation, dying, embroidery and other techniques suitable for garment design and production. Marketing and promotion, how to build your brand and business.  We take the students through the process of applying to university through their UCAS application. Modules are delivered by a range of specialist, highly qualified, experienced tutors.

 

We encourage our students to work sustainably and consciously, encouraging them to contribute to a positive, ethical, and more sustainable working practice. Training the future designers of tomorrow how to be more socially responsible.

Academic Course Entry Requirements

Minimum entry requirements are pre-defined by the College’s admissions criteria, which can be found by visiting our entry criteria page on this link

Enhanced entry criteria for this course is:

GCSE at grade C in English (or equivalent); GCSE at grade B in Art (or equivalent); GCSE at grade C in Mathematics (or equivalent) and a minimum of two more GCSEs at grade C or above.

Non-academic course entry requirements

Important: All applicants must also meet the following conditions:

  • be 16 years old by 1 July 2026
  • provide proof of: 
  • Right to Study in the UK. For courses with work placement, proof of your right to work in the UK is also required. 
  • Photographic proof of identity 
  • Provide translated copies of and/or demonstrate equivalency of non-UK qualifications.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) for FE Courses

APL allows you to use evidence from prior learning or experience to gain entry onto a course at Belfast Met. All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

Assessment

Students are assessed using a range of different methods.

These includes exams, assignments, coursework, Project Based Learning, presentations, practical assessments, role-play, and case studies. 

This is dependent on the requirements of each unit of study.  Oral, written and online feedback will be provided during your course.

As this is a specialist course concentrating on Fashion design and the elements therein, career advancement can be diverse, Fashion design/styling/ buying, fashion illustration/journalism, etc. there are many careers that can be pursued, students are encouraged in their 2nd year to apply through UCAS to the many higher education courses available to them to advance their career opportunities.
