Overview

This is a two-year programme which is equivalent to three A Levels. This programme of study is likely to include enrichment units which are an additional component to enhance your employability.

The college offers two pathways of this course at Level 3 for students (equivalent to three A Levels) who wish to further their interest/studies in art and design and aim for a career in the creative industries, fashion, costume design, illustration, fashion buying, etc.

Requests to change direction between the two options after successful completion of year one of the two-year course will be considered. The fashion and clothing pathway is for students interested in the areas of fashion, design, garment making, pattern construction and the fashion business. There are opportunities to travel and participate in fashion events and design competitions.

You will experience practical hands-on learning, developing skills in sewing, tailoring, pattern construction and digital design. Modules are delivered by a range of specialist, highly qualified, experienced tutors. Successful completion may lead to progression to the HND in Fashion or other degrees/HNDs in related areas.

The industry employs nearly a million people, across a wide spectrum of roles, and provides diverse opportunities for young people. Fashion is a major player in addressing the issues of global competition and sustainability. Our courses are designed to help you develop your creative studies in a meaningful way and gives you the skills to develop your chosen career.

Requirements

Minimum entry requirements are pre-defined by the College’s admissions criteria, which can be found by visiting our entry criteria page on this link

Enhanced entry criteria for this course is:

GCSE at grade C in English (or equivalent); GCSE at grade B in Art (or equivalent); GCSE at grade C in Mathematics (or equivalent) and a minimum of two more GCSEs at grade C or above.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) for FE Courses

APL allows you to use evidence from prior learning or experience to gain entry onto a course at Belfast Met. All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

Assessment

Students are assessed using a range of different methods.

These includes exams, assignments, coursework, Project Based Learning, presentations, practical assessments, role-play, and case studies. 

This is dependent on the requirements of each unit of study.  Oral, written and online feedback will be provided during your course.

The course provides knowledge, understanding and skills for students wishing to enter a career in fashion/design/patterns and or progress to higher education completing degrees in completing degrees in Fashion/ Art and Design or a related design degree.

Possible careers in Fashion include:

Fashion Designer

Assists with the production of clothing, shoes and accessories, identifies trends, and selects styles, fabrics, colours, prints and trims for a collection. Use their creative flair to design new and original clothing. Average Salary - £16,000 - £42,000.

Personal Stylist
Help clients achieve their desired looks by aiding them in the selection of personal style items, such as clothes and shoes. Personal stylists must identify a client’s tastes, activities, body type and desired image in order to tailor a look to each client’s needs. Average Salary - £15,000 - £30,000.
