This innovative, theoretical and practical two-year course seeks to develop student’s knowledge and understanding of alongside associated skills for various roles related to Physical Education (PE) and sport. This is a high-demand course for anyone considering a career within education, e.g., primary and/or post-primary teaching, and/or sport, e.g. coaching and/or sport development.

Opportunities exist to progress to year two of the BSc (Hons) in Physical Education and Sport at Stranmillis University College, year two of the BA (Hons) Liberal Arts with Physical Education Degree at St. Mary’s University College and also relevant areas of study with other selected universities.

Facilities at Belfast Metropolitan College include a fully fitted Physiological Testing Laboratory. Additionally, students have access to Queen’s University sport facilities, e.g., PEC, and Stranmillis University College’s facilities, e.g. 3G pitch and MUGA.

The course consists of 12 compulsory modules, which are:

  • Physical Activity Lifestyle and Wellbeing
  • Practical Studies
  • Anatomy & Physiology for Physical Education and Sport

  • Applied Health, Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • Personal and Professional Development
  • Event Management in Physical Education and Sport
  • Work-Based Experience
  • Project in Physical Education and Sport

Requirements

Applications to this course must be made through the UCAS system using code 52L7

All applicants to the course must have a minimum grade C in GCSE English and Mathematics (Level 2 Essential Skills Communication is accepted in lieu of GCSE English, however, Level 2 Essential Skills Numeracy or Application of Number is not accepted as equivalent to GCSE Mathematics).

Applicants who are studying A Levels are required to obtain two grade Cs, with at least one subject from the following list – Physical Education, Sports Studies, Biology, Leisure Studies, Food and Nutrition, Life and Health Sciences, Health and Social Care. BTEC Level 3 equivalents in any of the above subjects are also acceptable.

Applicants who are studying Irish Leaving Certificate are required to obtain 4 grades of H5 to including a minimum O4 in Leaving Cert English and Mathematics and at least one subject must be from the above list.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used including case studies, assignments, time constrained assessments, oral presentations, exams and project based assessments.

Students also get the opportunity to volunteer within live sporting events run by Belfast City Council and Special Olympics in addition students will be involved a live Christmas event and teaching in local primary schools as part of the course.

Work based assessments are embedded on a yearly basis and placement opportunities are available with various organisations.
