Overview

This is a one-year full-time fast track course which is designed to attract students who want to progress into Higher Education within the field of Engineering, Physics, Maths and teaching. This course will develop your knowledge and application of both Maths and Physics and prepare you to progress to Higher Education. Whilst the course is free additional travel costs may be incurred as Physics practicals are on the Titanic Campus and materials required for Maths include a calculator and geometry set. 

About the course 

On the course you will be taught modules in Maths, Physics and Applied Physics.  These modules are aimed at providing a strong foundation in these subject and have been designed in conjunction with Ulster University to ensure the students are prepared to progress to a Higher Education course in the field of Engineering. Modules include: 

  •  Introduction to Mathematics
    • Introduction to Physics
    • Core Mathematics 
    • Core Physics 
    • Advanced Mathematics 
    • Applied Physics 

This programme of study is likely to include enrichment activities/module(s) to enhance your employability.  

Assessment within these modules will range from class tests, group work, lab reports and examinations.  All assessments are carried out in English.

Requirements

College regulations stipulate that applicants to the course must: 

  •  normally be 19 years of age or over at the date of entry to the programme and have no recent experience of formal education;
  •  provide evidence of a basic competence in written and oral communication in English and Numeracy skills;
  •  demonstrate motivation for and ability to cope with the academic demands of the programme;
  •  complete a diagnostic test to assess their competence in literacy and numeracy.

Students who successfully complete the diploma may progress to study for degrees such as Aeronautical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronic and Electric Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Product Design and Development. Students who successfully complete the course may also progress to further and higher education courses within Belfast Met, including HND and Foundation Degree programmes.
