Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (601/7198/4)
Overview
This is a two-year, full time programme which is equivalent to three A Levels and covers an in-depth study of the health and social care sector.
Successful completion of this course allows progression to health and social care related degrees and employment. The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with higher education to ensure it supports progression to higher study.
Employers and professional bodies have also been involved in order to confirm that the content is also appropriate for those interested in working in the sector.
About this course
Teaching staff include qualified nurses, social workers and other healthcare professionals.
You will study a range of exciting subjects including Human Lifespan Development, Working in Health and Social Care, Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs, and Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care.
Assessment includes assignments, practical based activities and examinations. You will be supported to undertake a mandatory placement(s) with a minimum requirement of 100 hours over the two years. This will give you the opportunity to work directly with service users and a range of professional health and social care staff. Such valuable experience will also support further study and employment.
This programme of study is likely to include enrichment activities/ module(s) which are included to enhance your employability. This will include learning valuable skills required in the workplace.

Requirements are pre-defined by the College’s admissions criteria.
Students must be at least 16 years of age on or before 1 July 2024. Students must be well-motivated and have completed a programme of general education to Key Stage 4 which would enable them to benefit from and succeed on the course.
Students must have one of the following:
- Four GCSEs at Grade C or above (in some circumstances, applicants with a qualifications profile equating to 12 points with a minimum of three GCSEs at Grade C or above will be accepted).
- BTEC First Diploma or Certificate (with a qualification profile equivalent to 12 points or above).
- NVQ Level 2 in a relevant subject area.
- Leaving Certificate (a profile equivalent to 12 points of which three subjects must be at Grade C3 or above at ordinary level).
Preference may be given to those with Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy or equivalent.
An Access NI check will also be undertaken for all students at the commencement of the course.

Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress onto higher education including courses in nursing, midwifery, social work, teaching and allied health professions.
This course also prepares you for appropriate employment in the health and social care sector.
