Overview

The Access programmes are aimed at students who have been out of full-time education for a minimum of two years.  The ethos of the access programmes are that they are designed to facilitate a ‘return’ to study and provide an alternative route for mature students wishing to apply for entry to higher education, who for a variety of reasons do not have the traditional qualifications required.  The Access courses validated by QUB are widely recognised by all local universities and many UK Universities.

This course is two-year, full time in our Titanic Quarter Campus. It allows students without formal qualifications in science to progress onto the Access Biological/Biomedical programme, providing a holistic approach to develop academic skills and confidence in their ability to progress to university.  It is designed to build confidence, provide support (academic and personal) and develop scientific skills which are fundamental to the success of students in key Access modules.  Delivering enrichment courses in conjunction with the Access programme scaffolds the development of student academic knowledge and builds a foundation for the skills required at university. All Access programmes are Level 3 and considered to be equivalent to A level.

Specific modules are core modules and are studied over the two years

First year modules - Foundations of Biology, Foundations of Chemistry, Study and Employability Skills.

Second year modules – Further Biology, Microbiology and Study Skills.  The final module is chosen from Further Chemistry, Further Maths & Practical Applications, Foundations of Physics and Scientific Research Techniques and Statistics (modules run subject to numbers).
