Pearson BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Business (600/6816/4)
Overview
This one-year course is equivalent to 3 to 4 GCSEs A*-C and will enable you to develop in-depth knowledge, skills and understanding across a range of business topics. Students work together to investigate business needs and trends relating to current external environments.
This course will allow you to gain knowledge through units, such as:
- Principles of Marketing
- Finance for Business
- Enterprise in the Business World
- Recruitment, Selection and Employment
- Principles of Customer Service
- Using Business Documentation
- Financial Planning and Forecasting
- Introducing Retail Business
- Building Successful Business Teams
- Enhancing the Customer Experience
- Providing Business Support
As a Traineeship this programme of study gives students the opportunity to gain Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy with potential to gain a level 2 qualification, equivalent to a GCSE grade C. If you do not have a grade C or above in Maths or English, it is compulsory that you complete this as part of your timetable. For those applicants with a grade D in GCSE, we offer a fast-track course at the beginning of the year and our Essential Skills team will be able to help you during enrolment.
Successful applicants will also be required to undertake work placement 1 day per week and will also completed Transversal Skills qualification at Level 2 which are essential for employment across diverse sectors.

Academic course entry requirements
You must hold a minimum of a Level 1 qualification, defined as four GCSEs at grades D to G including Maths grade E and English grade D or equivalent.
Students must also come with an employer who is willing to allow them to work 1 full day per week for the duration of the course.
Non-academic course entry requirements
Important: All applicants must also meet the following conditions:
- be 16 years old by 1 July 2026.
- provide proof of:
§ Right to Study in the UK. For courses with work placement, proof of your right to work in the UK is also required.
§ Photographic proof of identity
- Provide translated copies of and/or demonstrate equivalency of non-UK qualifications.

Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded on your online application account.
All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

This course tuition fee is fully funded by the Department for the Economy.
Assessment is carried out by a combination of external exams, portfolio work, practical tasks, and observations.
Careers
On successful completion of this qualification and Essential Skills Literacy at Level 2, opportunities exist to progress to the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Business or other Level 3 courses. Alternatively, a range of employment opportunities exist in the business environment.
