Overview

This highly valued qualification will provide you with the skills and knowledge to work in the fitness industry as a gym instructor.  The course is internationally recognised and gives entry to CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) at Level 2.  This is an entry level qualification for the health and fitness industry and therefore has no academic entry requirements.

The course you will be enrolled on is the Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing

These are the units you will undertake;

  • Principles of Anatomy, Physiology and Fitness
  • Professionalism and Customer Care for Fitness Instructors
  • Health and Safety in the Fitness Environment
  • Conducting Client Consultations to Support Positive Behaviour Change
  • Planning and Instructing Gym-Based Exercise
Requirements

Students should be aged 16 plus prior to commencement of the course and ideally some experience of gym-based exercises including free weights.

Students should be fit enough to cope with physical exertion and individual participation involved in the course. There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication at Level 2.

Students need to have the required competence to complete work at home every evening in the form of written worksheets or revising for an exam for the duration of the course.

Enrolment for this course session closes: Friday 27th March 2026.

The course manual and start letter will be sent the week before the course commences.

Course Materials cost is £32:00 (non-refundable) 

Teaching is for 1 week (7 consecutive days), starting Monday 13th April 2026 with the possibility of an additional day at a later date for assessing if the students require it.

Please note that 2 practical assessments are as a group, which should take place during the allocated course time and 1 practical assessment which is individually undertaken, and you will be required to provide your own client. The individual practical assessment will take place 1-3 weeks after the course at a mutually agreeable time.

If you are enrolling on an intensive course you are required to complete and submit an LS1 form and to contact CILD at least 30 working days prior to the course start date, to allow adequate time to discuss what support options may be available. It is also advisable to speak with the Curriculum team, so you are fully aware of the demands of an intensive course.

Assessment is through a range of practical observations, exam, case studies/ worksheets and a portfolio.
