Overview
Our music courses are designed to provide our students with working knowledge, understanding and expertise of performance and production, in order that they can find their place and make their mark in the music industry. On all our courses, students will gain practical experience working in a recording studio, using live sound equipment and using a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), in addition to theoretical support in each unit. Students will have an opportunity to perform to public audiences in venues across the city and beyond, and to run their own events.
With Belfast's newfound status as a UNESCO City of Music, there has never been a better time to study music at Belfast Met. Despite the COVID -19 pandemic, the UK as a whole contributed £3.1bn in 2020 and whilst some areas of the music economy have been affected, other areas of the industry such as media composition are experiencing rapid growth. We give our students the necessary skills and knowledge to adapt and thrive in this evolving landscape.
This course is designed for students who can demonstrate that they have the talent, commitment and potential necessary to create a career in music. Students to acquire a range of practical and theoretical skills including some music technology, giving them the opportunity to develop into well rounded musicians.
All classes are delivered by lecturers who are highly qualified and experienced, within the professional music industry.
Performances and professional productions and rehearsals take place at the OH Yeah Music Centre. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to perform work public venues around Belfast, in addition to performances staged within our college facilities. You will have access to our sound recording studio and computer music labs, which are equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software. This is a two year programme equivalent to three A Levels. This programme of study is likely to include enrichment units which are an additional component to enhance your employability.

Enhanced entry criteria for this course is:
4 GCSEs C or above, including GCSE Music or Grade 4 on an instrument / voice, L2 Diploma Pass or above, or other qualifications equivalent to 12 Belfast Met Tariff Points
Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) for FE Courses
APL allows you to use evidence from prior learning or experience to gain entry onto a course at Belfast Met. Belfast Met will work with you to make sure that relevant learning or work experience is formally recognised through the APL Process. All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

Students are assessed using a range of different methods.
These includes exams, assignments, coursework, Project Based Learning, presentations, practical assessments, role-play, and case studies.
This is dependent on the requirements of each unit of study. Oral, written and online feedback will be provided during your course.
Careers
Successful achievement of the Extended Diploma Students can pursue a career in computer music, production and sound engineering or the creative technologies sector. Students may wish to progress to professional training in their specialist area or to degree level. Some students may also be able to progress onto Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Music at Belfast Met, subject to achieving the entrance requirements.
Possible careers include:
Music Producer
Oversee all aspects of a recording session, from planning the sessions to the finished product. As a music producer, you’ll be responsible for providing instruments, scheduling studio time and handling funding, costs and negotiations. You’ll also work with and coach musicians.
Session Musician
Backs another artist during live performances or in the studio. He or she must be able sight read and to perform several different genres. Session Musicians work with Producers, Bandleaders, Recording Artists and other musicians.
