Justice Minister Naomi Long has visited Maghaberry Prison, highlighting the importance of rehabilitation and skills development in preparing people in custody for a successful return to the community.

During the visit, the Minister toured the newly opened Thyme Coffee and Grill café, delivered in partnership with Belfast Metropolitan College. The café provides practical barista and catering training for prisoners nearing release, helping participants develop industry-relevant skills and gain valuable workplace experience.

The Minister also visited the Mourne Community Complex, where individuals nearing release work in a lower-supervision environment designed to build responsibility, independence and employability. She met staff and prisoners involved in vocational programmes, including horticulture and workshop activities.

Speaking following the visit, Naomi Long said:
"It was invaluable to see first-hand the positive work taking place within Maghaberry. Initiatives like this play a vital role in building skills, confidence and opportunities, helping to reduce reoffending and support safer communities."

"I was particularly impressed by the professionalism and dedication of staff, who work every day to support meaningful change."

Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, Beverley Wall, added:
"Rehabilitation is at the heart of our approach, and these initiatives are key to helping individuals build safer, more positive futures."

The visit highlighted the importance of partnership working in supporting rehabilitation and employability, with Belfast Met helping participants develop practical skills and confidence to support progression into employment following release.
