Belfast Met and NI Water Launch Applied Science Research Project for Traineeship Students
Belfast Met and NI Water have launched a new employer-led Applied Science Work-Based Learning Research Project for Level 2 Traineeship students, offering an exciting opportunity for learners to apply their scientific knowledge to real-world environmental challenges in the field of water purification processes.
Developed in partnership with NI Water, the initiative will see students take on the role of environmental scientists, investigating the stages of water purification of local water systems through chemistry, microbiology, engineering and data analysis.
Through the project, students will undertake scientific research, analyse water samples provided by NI Water, produce an analysis of quantitative data, design and engineer filtration systems and present evidence-based findings to a panel of representatives from NI Water and Belfast Met, who will then take the findings on board and provide feedback to students. The transversal skills will develop practical scientific expertise alongside the integrity of professional and employability skills valued by industry.
A key feature of the programme is the opportunity for students to receive mentorship from the NI Water team, gaining first-hand insight into how and why it is essential scientific skills are applied within the water industry. This collaboration will help learners build technical, analytical and problem-solving capabilities while exploring the diverse range of STEM careers, progression routes and apprenticeships available for students starting with GCSE's within the NI Water service and across Northern Ireland.
The partnership reflects the shared commitment and collaboration of Belfast Met and NI Water to nurturing future talent and inspiring the next generation of scientists. By connecting classroom learning with industry experience, the project will equip students with valuable workplace skills, broaden their career aspirations and provide a meaningful insight into the opportunities available within the science and environmental sectors.
