Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP)

KTP is one of the UK’s leading business support initiatives, with a strong track record of helping businesses improve their competitiveness and productivity through better use of knowledge, technology and skills. The programme is a three-strand partnership between a business, an academic and a recently qualified graduate (an Associate) to deliver a project.

The objective of KTP is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and the spread of technical skills through innovative projects. The funding organisations contribute up to 60% of the cost of the project, supporting employment costs, mentoring, professional development, travel and equipment.

The benefits of taking part in a KTP:

  • businesses achieve an average increase in annual profit of more than £1 million after taking part.
  • around 2 new jobs are created
  • around 60% of associates are offered a permanent job in the company when the project ends

KTP at Belfast Met

Draw on Belfast Met’s expertise and apply it to your business, with support from our team who can help you define a project in an area you see as high priority. Duration can be between one and three years, with the goal of helping your business innovate in this critical area.

A high calibre graduate is recruited as your KTP Associate, based in your company and part of your team. The Associate’s role: to implement your strategic initiative while being mentored by our academics who will also contribute their knowledge and experience. As the Associate develops the project, he/she regularly meets with their academic/research supervisor to move the programme forward.

"Our company has found the KTP programme a very valuable and worthwhile experience. We have established a collaborative ongoing relationship with our KTP partner, Belfast Metropolitan College. Our KTP Associate is a real asset. He is a credit to the KTP programme and is now a valued member of our team." Sinead Gaynor, Hawk Protection.
