VTCT Skills Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering - VTCT Skills - Hairdressing (601/5885/2)

Overview

Level 1 Hairdressing course is an introduction to the Hairdressing Sector, it enables students to develop a range of practical skills through introducing them to the hair industry. You will further develop your skills through demonstrations, practical workshops, lectures, tutorials and competition work.

The courses will cover many units for your learning experience including:

•             Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas

•             Shampoo and conditioning

•             Blow dry hair

•             Contribute to the development of effective working relationships

•             Plait and twist hair

•             Assist with hair colouring and lightening services

Essential Skills at the appropriate assessed level, qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy are also part of the programme of study for students who have not achieved a Grade C or equivalent in these subjects.

This programme of study is likely to include additional enrichment activities/module(s) which are included to enhance your employability.

Requirements

Academic course entry requirements

You must hold a minimum of 3 GCSEs with E in Maths and English E grades. Will be required to attend essential skills English & Maths to enhance grades.

Non-academic course entry requirements

Important: All applicants must also meet the following conditions:

  • be16 years old by 1 July 2026. 
  • provide proof of: 

§ Right to Study in the UK. For courses with work placement, proof of your right to work in the UK is also required. 

§ Photographic proof of identity 

  • Provide translated copies of and/or demonstrate equivalency of non-UK qualifications.

Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol e.g. exam certificates.

Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded on your online application account.

All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, with the exception of language specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

All fees are set in accordance with DfE regulations. 

This course tuition fee is fully funded by the Department for the Economy.  

Students are required to supply their own kit, costing approximately £ 140.00 and a uniform costing approximately £40.00. Lists of kit and uniform requirements will be given once student is enrolled. 

Assessment

You will be assessed throughout your year under continuous assessment both practically and through assignment/online assessment. During your course you will work in the college’s salon Urban Escape, this will help you gain the salon experience and further support your skills development and progression.

There are many options as a hairdresser, working in a salon, being self-employed as a freelance stylist or within a commercial salon. Hairdressing skills can be used across many industries such as Hotels, Spa’s, cruise ships, Tv and film industry as a senior stylist you will work at an advanced level using all cutting and colour skills. Day to day duties of any hairdresser would include meeting different people while cutting, styling, and colouring, keeping up to date with latest trends, techniques, and products.
