Overview

If you want a career as a hair stylist and makeup artist, or to work in the beauty industry in general, then this is the course for you, as it will give you all the practical and artistic skills you need to be a success in your chosen career.

On this course you'll develop the skills and expertise required to start your career as a professional hair and makeup artist. You'll learn how to create intricate makeup and stunning hair designs, and you will have the opportunity to explore body art design.

This one-year Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Makeup will not just increase your skills in hairdressing and makeup application, it will also teach you about eyelash and brow treatments, skin tanning techniques, and body artistry.

As well as developing your beauty-treatment knowledge, skills, and techniques, this course will also teach you about working in a salon and customer care, to really prepare you for life as a junior hair and makeup artist. All practical activity takes place within a live salon environment and requires practice on yourself and others during training prior to assessment.

What modules will you do?

You will study a mixture of exiting areas, such as:

  • The art of dressing hair
  • Client care
  • Photographic makeup
  • Applying makeup

Essential Skills Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy are also part of the programme of study for students who have not achieved a Grade C or equivalent in these subjects.

This programme of study is likely to include additional enrichment activities/module(s) which are included to enhance your employability.

Enhance entry criteria for this course is listed below:

  • Applicants should hold a Level 1 Hairdressing or APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning).

Proof of qualifications MUST be provided when you enrol, e.g., exam certificates.

Achieved and pending qualifications can be recorded now by logging into your online application account.

All courses within Belfast Met are delivered and assessed in English, apart from language-specific courses. Your competence in English must be verified prior to enrolling on your chosen course.

Entry requirements can change and be discussed on an individual basis if necessary.

In the event of undersubscription, course criteria may be lowered.

Fees

All fees are set in accordance with DfE regulations.

This course tuition fee is fully funded by the Department for the Economy.

You will be required to buy a Belfast Met uniform, costing approximately £35.00 and kit costing approximately £35.00 (if needed).  Lists of kit requirements will be sent to students once enrolled.

After successful completion of the course, you may progress to the level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Makeup. Here you will advance your hair and makeup skills and learn prosthetics and SFX.

 

Alternatively, there are many options as a hairdresser, working in a salon, being self employed as a freelance stylist or within a commercial salon, skills can be used across many industries such as Hotels, Spa’s, cruise ships, Tv and film industry as a senior stylist you will work at an advanced level using all cutting and colour skills as well as using more creative skills in bridal and special event styling.

Day to day duties of any hairdresser would include meeting different people while cutting, styling, and colouring, keeping up to date with new trends, techniques and products.
