Overview
This course is funded through the Skill Up Programme. Skill Up has been designed to provide additional upskilling reskilling opportunities to improve the skills and profile of our local workforce.
A mandatory induction session will be held on 6th January from 6pm to 7pm. You must attend this session before learning commences commence on 13th January
The objectives of this qualification are to gain knowledge and understanding of autism, including:
• how to adopt a positive approach to supporting autistic individuals
• the current legislative framework relating to autistic individuals and how different theories have developed over time
• how to support and manage transitions for autistic individuals
• the range of therapeutic interventions and support available for autistic individuals and co-occurring conditions
• how to support communication and social interaction for autistic individuals
• how to develop an understanding of how autistic individuals may be vulnerable and the support worker’s role and responsibilities relating to safeguarding according to legislative requirements.
Learners must meet the following programme eligibility criteria:
- over 18 years of age;
- eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
- ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or
- a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.
Documentation confirming eligibility of the above criteria will be requested prior to securing a place on the course.
Courses will be delivered online, and learners must have access to a computer or laptop and internet. Please note that tablets, mobile phones and TVs are not compatible and should not be used for this course.
A microphone and web camera are also desirable to improve engagement in each session.
In addition, the course requires the learner to have an appropriate level of written and spoken English and computer literacy.
It would be desirable for applicants to have previously completed the Level 2 Introductory Awareness of Autistic Spectrum Conditions course

The course is assessed through completion of an online portfolio, with Questions/Assignments to be completed for each Learning outcome, showing evidence of knowledge and understanding of the subject area.

Leisure and Employment Support – helping autistic individuals access inclusive activities and work opportunities
