Overview
This course will be one evening per week and will study a range of photographic techniques, materials, processes and concepts that are essential to all areas of study in Photography.
- The camera and it functions, including Depth of Field, Shutter Speed, Focal Points and Viewpoints.
• The application of observational skills to record from sources and communicate ideas.
• The effects and creative potential for combining and manipulating different two and three dimensional materials and media.
• The use of digital and/or non-digital applications
Area of Study
Work must demonstrate integrated knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to Photography. The work is not limited to one area of study and students could develop work in at least one of the following areas:
Documentary Photography
The use of the photographic process to provide a narrative of events or situations.
The use of a range of documentary photography materials, tools and techniques such as compositional, proximity to the subject, focal points and the involvement of the photographer wit the scene being documented
Studio Photography
The use of a formal studio setting to control the environment for a variety of subject matter such as portraiture and still life.
The use of a range of studio photography materials, tools and techniques such as lighting and the use of light, props, posing and the arrangement of objects.
Location Photography
The use of subject matter found or placed to manipulate the formal elements within an existing environment.
The use of a range of location photography materials, tools and techniques such as lighting and light metering, developing site-specific shoot plans.
Experimental Imagery
The control of light and photographic processes to create non-traditional outcomes.
The use of a range of experimental imagery materials, tools and techniques such as analogue and digital photography, manual manipulation and digital/non digital processes and outcomes

FE Tuition Fee = £230.00 (Concessionary = £138.00)
Examination / Registration Fee = £50.00
Fees are payable annually.
Students must create a personal portfolio of work that demonstrates photographic knowledge, and understanding of skills followed during the course. The portfolio is one part of the assessment process the second part is an externally set assignment.
Externally Set Assignment
- The External paper is released in January each year and will be given to students as soon as it’s released.
• A preparatory period of study will be set by the College prior to the start of a 10-hour sustained focus period.
• The 10-hour sustained focus period will take place under examination conditions over a period of three to four weeks.
• Preparatory studies will comprise of a portfolio of development work based on the ESA thematic starting point.
• All work is internally marked and externally moderated by a visiting moderator.

GCSE photography will set you up to further your photographic skills and knowledge to allow you to progress to AS/A2 Art/Design Photography.
