Overview

The CCEA GCSE English Language specification encourages students to explore and respond, both imaginatively and critically, to a variety of texts.

Classes run 1 night a week in our Millfield campus between 6pm - 9pm. We have 3 options available, a Monday evening class, a Tuesday evening class or a Wednesday evening class.

Students use reading to improve their writing and spoken language skills. They also enhance their understanding of how language variations relate to identity and cultural diversity.

This specification develops key transferable skills, such as selecting and adapting speech and writing to suit different situations and audiences.

The specification provides a sound basis for progression to further study, higher education or employment.

This qualification builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills developed through the Language and Literacy Area of Learning.

This specification is unitised, so it’s possible to take part of the assessment before the end of the course.

The specification has four units:

  • Unit 1: Writing for Purpose and Audience and Reading to Access Non-fiction and Media Texts
  • Unit 2: Speaking and Listening
  • Unit 3: Studying Spoken and Written Language
  • Unit 4: Personal or Creative Writing and Reading Literary and Non-fiction Texts.

Requirements

This course is designed for anyone who does not have a current GCSE English qualification or is seeking to improve their grade.

The part-time English GCSE is an intensive, 1 year, option that requires independent study as well as full commitment to attending all the classes.

You will be invited into the College to complete an initial assessment to determine your suitability for the course. If you already have a GCSE English grade (D or above, or equivalent), please bring your qualifications and you will not need to complete the initial assessment. If the assessment shows that you need to improve your literacy skills, you may be directed to an alternative, such as Essential Skills or ESOL classes.

After applying online, you will receive an email with details about your initial assessment appointment, including the time, date, and room. Once the assessments are reviewed, tutors will confirm whether you have been accepted into the course or if an alternative course is recommended.
