This course is aimed at students who wish to pursue a specific career in the journalism sector, its related field or other related employment, such as public relations or political lobbying. Journalism forms an important part of the creative industries in the UK and Ireland and it is clear that employment opportunities are set to increase in these areas, particularly with the development of online and social media formats and outlets. The course on offer over the two years is equivalent to three A levels. Students will take 13 units, of which seven are mandatory and six are optional. Four units are externally tested and nine by internal assessment. The overall programme of study is also likely to include enrichment units which are an additional component to enhance your employability. The mandatory units include: Media Representations, Working in the Creative Media Industry, Digital Media Skills, Pre-production Portfolio, Specialist Subject Investigation, Media Campaigns, and Responding to a Commission. The optional units include: Digital Magazine Production, Advertising Production, Interviewing Techniques, Writing Copy, Digital Photography and Page Layout and Design for Digital Media. Students will have access to state of the art television and radio studios, and will learn skills and knowledge linked to a cross-platform and multi-vocational approach to the broad journalism industry. Students will also be able to engage with employers in the industry, gain work placement experience and contribute to the College’s online radio, moving image and print outlets. As well as lectures, there will be field trips and visits which will allow students to experience life as a working journalist. On successful completion, students will gain a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Media Production (Interactive Publishing and Media)

Career Opportunities / Progression

As this is a very specific route, successful completion will allow you to progress to higher level qualifications in journalism or a related field, such as a Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Broadcast Journalism, or an honours degree in Journalism

Requirements are pre-defined by the College’s admissions criteria which are outlined at the beginning of this document. Students must have a minimum of six GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English and Maths. Applicants will be required to attend a pre-entry guidance session, which may include a short written exercise
