This is a Basic level (Entry 1) course in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). There are 2 types of Reading Entry level 1 courses: Intensive (15 hours per week for 5 weeks) and part-time (3.5 – 4 hours per week for 10 weeks).
This general ESOL course will help you to improve your reading in English. We will prepare you for the City and Guilds ESOL Skills for Life Reading exam at Entry Level 1.
This course will help you to:
• Understand sentences and common phrases about basic personal and family information, shopping, the local area and jobs.

By the end of the course you should be able to:
• Recognise basic words, sign and symbols
• Use basic punctuation and capitalisation
• Follow a short narrative on a familiar topic

Basic topics include: personal details, countries and nationalities, home, work, family and friends, free time and daily routines, health, travel and transport, weather, buying things, and living in the UK.
We will also study the following: present simple, adverbs of frequency, present continuous, adjectives, question words, can ...?, there is/there are, have and has got, simple conjunctions, Verb + ing, comparisons and can for ability.
We have a maximum of 18 students in ESOL classes.

Your teacher may recommend a textbook for further study but materials will be provided in class.

An assessment is required for application to this course.

Career Opportunities / Progression

This course will help you to progress through our ESOL courses. The next course after Reading Entry level 1 is Reading Entry level 2. Please talk to your teacher at the end of the course to discuss the best progression route for you

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 16 years old to study ESOL at Belfast Metropolitan College.

All students must be assessed before the start of the course. Our teachers will give you a short test to check your level of English and then we will advise you on the best course to suit your needs. If you have certificates from a previous ESOL course, you may not need to take the test but you must bring your certificates with you to the assessment session.

You must also bring photographic ID, such as a valid passport or national identity card to the assessment session.
