As Jasmine Ashfield, a former BSc (Hons) Fashion Production and Business student, prepares to graduate in November 2024, she reflects on her time at Belfast Met, the opportunities her course provided and the experience of showcasing her products at the Emergency Services Show in Birmingham with the Cooneen Group team.

“The best academic decision I made as a student was choosing to study at Belfast Met. The great thing about this degree is that every single module we undertake gives us a deeper understanding into the industry so that we have the knowledge to succeed in our future job positions,” Jasmine says.

In her final year, Jasmine and her peers collaborated with Cooneen Group, a market leading garment designer, manufacturer and supplier, during their Fashion Production Development module. After researching, designing and constructing two gold seal samples of adaptive and inclusive paramedic trousers, Cooneen Group selected Jasmine as their winner.  Alongside a monetary prize, Jasmine also had the opportunity to attend and showcase these trousers at the Emergency Services Show in Birmingham with the team at Cooneen Group.

“Being able to attend the Emergency Services Show and showcase my own product to end users was a once-in-a-lifetime experience as a young graduate. The experience has been an eye-opener, having a first-hand view into the garment industry here in Northern Ireland with a market leading company.”

Jasmine continues: “I was extremely blessed to be the successful candidate to attend the event with Cooneen Group and get an insight into their company and the garment construction world for protection and workwear. I’m so grateful to add this experience to my CV to further my career in the fashion industry.”

From our time working with Cooneen Group and attending the Emergency Services Show, I can see how relevant each area (of the industry) truly is; from being able to understand the research and design stage, right up to the garment construction.”

Looking back on her time at Belfast Met, Jasmine emphasises that the continuous support and expert guidance she received were instrumental in her success.

“Throughout the entirety of completing my degree, I have been met with an incredible source of support and guidance from the team at Belfast Met. Their dedication, knowledge and willingness to offer feedback has not only deepened my understanding but also motivated me to push my limits.

Without their continuous support and encouragement, I do believe I wouldn’t have gotten the results that I did. Their support has truly made a difference in my learning experience.”
