What apprenticeship are you currently studying?
“I am currently a second year student at Belfast Met studying for an Event Management apprenticeship.
“I have worked at Regency House Belfast for 2.5 years. Starting in housekeeping and facilities, I progressed into the Event Coordinator role approximately 6 months after starting my apprenticeship. I am now coming up to a year of being in my Events Coordinator role.”
What made you want to study an apprenticeship?
“Having previously studied Law and Politics in university, I knew that I didn’t want to go back into full-time education. I was very happy with my full-time job and felt like it would be difficult to balance the two.
“However, I was eager to branch into something new within my workplace and expressed an interest in events. I wanted to study an apprenticeship because I was eager to gain hands-on experience in the event management industry, while also learning the theoretical aspects. It seemed like a great way to combine education with practical work.”
How has Belfast Met helped on your apprenticeship journey?
“The support from the staff at Belfast Met has been instrumental in my learning. I am never in doubt that I can go to a member of staff for support or help. The knowledge and understanding I have gained from experienced lecturers is invaluable. Not to mention, the structured curriculum covers all aspects of event management.”
How has your employer helped you on your apprenticeship journey?
“My previous role within Regency House was Housekeeping and Facilities Supervisor. Once I expressed interest in events, my employer was quick to offer support and encouraged me to enrol in this course. They have been incredibly supportive by giving me real responsibilities in planning and executing events. They provide mentorship and feedback, which has helped me grow my skills and confidence in the field.”
What has been your biggest achievement to date regarding your apprenticeship?
“In general, my biggest achievement would be how much confidence I have gained through my apprenticeship. Compared to the beginning of my apprenticeship, I have really grown and flourished, taking ownership and responsibility of my studies and my job role. All together it is incredibly rewarding to reflect on and to know that there are only more achievements to come!”
What do you believe are the advantages of undertaking an apprenticeship?
“The advantages include gaining practical experience, earning a salary while learning, and having a direct pathway into a career. I also appreciate the networking opportunities that come with working in the industry.
“The hands-on experience I gain from my job reinforces my understanding of theoretical concepts, making me more confident and capable in both my apprenticeship and my role.”
What advice would you give people who are considering an apprenticeship at Belfast Met?
“I would advise them to be proactive, ask questions, and take advantage of all the resources available at Belfast Met. Connecting with other apprentices and industry professionals can also provide valuable insights and support.”
