India Robinson Web

India Robinson has worked in the family business – JBR Services – from a young age.

To progress her career further, India decided to undertake an apprenticeship with Belfast Met, gaining the credentials to become a fully qualified plumber.

Read more about India’s apprenticeship journey below.

What apprenticeship are you currently studying, and what year are you in?

“I'm studying a Plumbing and Heating Apprenticeship at Belfast Met. I am currently in my second year about to start my Level Three.

“I am employed by JBR Services based in Co. Armagh. This is my family's business which I have always had a role in from a young age. I decided to work full-time with my dad about three years ago and, after a year of full-time work alongside my dad (Jim) and my two brothers (James and Sam), I decided to get my plumbing qualifications.”

What made you want to study an apprenticeship?

“I have always had an interest in plumbing from a young age. My dad would take me with him on sites when I was around 4/5 years old. When I left school, I had no idea what I wanted to do so I decided to continue with my studies and get my diploma in media.

“I then went on to university while still working with my family part-time. I disliked being in a classroom all day and that's when I decided to give plumbing a real chance. I put the books down and went out on the tools for just over a year before deciding to go to Belfast Met. I wanted to make sure it was the right pathway for me.”

How has Belfast Met helped on your apprenticeship journey?

"Going to Belfast Met has given me more confidence in myself and my abilities. My tutors are so supportive and push me to be better. Although I am the only girl in my class, they have never treated me differently and want to see me succeed.

“I could have chosen to go to another college closer to home but ultimately I am glad I chose Belfast Met as it has given me the opportunity to grow my skill set and thrive in my chosen industry.”

How has your employer helped you on your apprenticeship journey?

“My employer and family have been my biggest support in this industry. It is truly one of the hardest things I have ever done but also the best thing I could've done for myself. I am so thankful to my brothers, Sam and James, for taking the time to show me how to do things that I never thought I would be able to do.

“My dad is my biggest supporter of all, he's always been there for me through the good and bad days and believed in me even when I didn't even believe in myself. I want nothing more than to make them all proud.”

What has been your biggest achievement to date regarding your apprenticeship?

“My biggest achievement to date is getting my trailer license and driving across Ireland/ Scotland with large industrial heaters and also getting my boom lift and scissor lift licence.”

What do you believe are the advantages to undertaking an apprenticeship?

“There are so many advantages to getting an apprenticeship, for instance getting to earn while you learn! it allows you to grow your skills while making a living and, as someone who decided to commit to an apprenticeship in my early 20’s, it really was a no brainer.”

What advice would you give people who are considering an apprenticeship at Belfast Met?

“ I would say just do it! Is it hard? Yes! But it is also the most rewarding thing I have ever done. Belfast Met was definitely the right choice for me and I am sure it will be for you too.”
